  17. <p>    In the high-wire act of television, videotape is the
  18. safety net. A flubbed line or failed joke can be edited into
  19. oblivion. But for one TV series, the net is about to be removed:
  20. starting this fall, the Fox sitcom Roc will be broadcast live.
  21. Surprisingly, the daring deed is welcomed by Broadway actor
  22. CHARLES S. DUTTON, a.k.a. Roc, the beleaguered Baltimore
  23. garbageman. "Television is basically boring and unchallenging,"
  24. says Dutton, now starring opposite Sigourney Weaver in Alien 3.
  25. "You can learn lines the day you shoot. You don't have to put
  26. in any concentration in the rehearsals. Going live will
  27. intensify everything."
